Relating Or Dealing

Are you in a relationship or deal with the other person? We go to a car dealership looking for the best deal, scan over a few cars, and finally choose whether to take it or leave it. The same question applies here: are you working for it, or letting it work for you? There is a difference, and style without substance can leave you stuck with a lemon. A title alone does not make something valuable, and neither does a pretty face or a smooth line.

What A Relationship Means

The base word of relationship is to relate, and that means being able to connect and learn one another’s needs. A relationship is less about “I” and more about “We.” It is not just about what one person brings to the table, but what both individuals bring. Before getting involved, get past looks and the pocketbook and see if this person is really for you. Real connection takes effort from both sides, and that is where a lot of people slip.

The Dealership Mindset

A dealership is one sided and self-centered. It focuses less on both people’s needs and more on what one person can get out of it. It becomes an if I give you something, you give me something type of ordeal. Some couples live like that for years, but eventually they realize they need something more from that person: love. Compatibility matters, or the whole thing turns into a transaction. When everything is measured by what can be traded, the relationship starts to feel cold and temporary.

Questions To Ask

Ask yourself if the communication is only about you or about both of you, if you give only to get something back, and if you think about your needs or each other’s needs. Ask what you sacrifice, whether you are genuinely happy, and whether gifts are covering up your true feelings. Those questions can tell you quickly if you are in a real relationship or just a dealership. Honest answers do not always feel comfortable, but they will save you time.
